Rafael "Roach" Valdez worked as a personal assistant for a top Hollywood movie producer. One of the duties of his job was to carry around a leather briefcase containing millions of dollars in cash.
A few months later, he started freelancing for film production companies in Los Angeles.
It was not an easy transition.
"After the first contract, I went to a nearby hospital because my hands were so shaky from the stress of it," he told CNN's Jean Casarez. "There's a lot of failure before success. I'm earning about $1,200 a week right now."

Some entrepreneurs say freelancing can mean an overall greater degree of freedom, creativity and control.
"While getting paid and working in the same space every day is good for some people, there are other people who like being able to explore new places, work in other cities, work at odd hours and not necessarily be there when they're needed," said Amanda Dinklage, founder of the freelance lifestyle website Freelancing Girl.
"They enjoy working for someone who can and will respond to their needs and no matter what their goal is, no matter what they want to pursue, they're there to help them reach it."
To make a good living as a freelancer, you should:

Earn an income from your passion, not your profession

Do not try to make money freelancing alone.
"Work with someone who's done it before, work with people who are doing it successfully," Valdez said.
In fact, work can go so well that freelance jobs may result in a partnership or a job as an employee.
"The benefit of being a freelancer is that once you find a client, you don't have to work as hard as when you were employed," said Marcia Lowenstern, founder of the digital marketing agency Fierce Digital Marketing.
Working from home means your parents can text you for lunch. You can start a business during school.
"This can help you earn money while having a social life and making sure that you're doing things that you want to do," Lowenstern said.
Taryn Morrissey, creator of the freelance lifestyle website Freelance Nation, said to be successful as a freelancer, you must be unique in your abilities.
"People want a personal connection, and in order to have a personal relationship, you have to know something about the person. I think that we're really good at using that intuition to tell that person about what they're really looking for," she said.
How do you earn money freelancing?
First, you must know the industry.
"Because there are so many different types of people, it's almost like you have to have a little niche to be successful as a freelance writer," Valdez said.
How do you get started?
Submit writing samples, consider freelance writing competitions or get hired as a freelancer.
But there's a big barrier to success.
"I have found a lot of freelancers that have struggled to find a job and work for the amount of money they're able to make," Valdez said. "They're not
willing to work enough hours to get a higher base pay."
Another issue, he said, is a lack of education.
